Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), Islamabad organized this seminar titled “Islamic Banking and Finance: Supreme Court Judgment on Riba and Beyond” on January 31, 2013, as part of a series of such events under its research program on Islamic economics and finance.
The seminar aimed at understanding various dimensions and different aspects and implications so far of the apex court’s landmark judgment that came in 1999.
Supreme Court’s 1999 verdict on Riba (Interest) was a historic and landmark development, not only for Pakistan but for the whole world. While a review petition was pending since long, there seems to be little scope for any major alteration.
Professor Khushid Ahmad, founding chairman, Institute of Policy Studies, who is internationally acclaimed as one of the pioneers and authorities in the field of Islamic finance was the keynote speaker. Others who spoke on the occasion included Dr Muhammad Tahir Mansuri, DG Shari'a Academy, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), Khalid Rahman, DG-IPS, Ameena Sohail, senior IPS associate, M. Saarim Ghazi, head of Shari'ah advisory and structuring, Al-Hidaya Center for Islamic Finance, and Ghazala Ghalib Khan, lecturer, Shari'a & Law, IIUI.
